I am frequently asked about Puffy Eyes. These are caused by a build up of fluid which generally is a cosmetic condition rather than an underlying medical one, but do check it out if concerned!
In some cases, puffiness can be hereditary; however one of the main factors is ageing. The delicate tissues and muscles around the eye weaken and lose elasticity as we age and can be more prone to water retention.
Most people notice their eyes appear puffier in the morning. A blocked nose or sinuses can cause under eye puffiness particularly in the winter months when central heating is on; sleeping with a small window open can help.
Raising your head with an extra pillow can be helpful, although this may not suit those with neck issues!
Other Causes:
Dehydration: make sure you drink enough water, particularly when you have drunk alcohol.
Lack of sleep: tossing and turning all night can play havoc with our eyes!
Allergies: food allergies, pollen, chemicals, additives etc can cause your eyes to redden, swell and be puffy.
Too much salt: causes your body to hold onto fluid.
Remedies:
Cool Compress: In the morning using something cool around the eyes can help reduce puffiness. I have a friend who keeps a teaspoon in the fridge that she uses on her puffy eye or some ice wrapped in some clingfilm!
Blinking: When we are asleep we are not blinking, so when we wake up and start blinking this may aid with dispersing the fluid.
Eye Exercises: Some gentle eye exercises are an excellent way to revitalise the eye area. Danielle Collins has some good videos online that show you what specific exercises to do.
Eye Creams/Eye Mask: Do not overload the delicate area under the eye. Give your eyes a 10 minute treat with a cool gel eye mask. (Boots, Elemis, Body Shop)
