The Appeal of Joanna Lumley

Joanna Lamond Lumley was born in 1946 in India whilst her father was an officer in the British Indian Army. She also spent time during her childhood in Malaysia and Kent.

Joanna started her career as a model but acting was her dream! Her acting career began in 1969 with a small role in the film ‘Some Girls Do’ and as a Bond Girl in ‘On her Majesty’s Secret Service’, where she had two lines! Her first major role was as Purdey in The New Avengers and in 1979 she appeared in the cult series Sapphire & Steel with David McCallum. Joanna’s most iconic role is as Patsy Stone, the frequently drunk fashion director, in the BBC comedy series ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ where she stars alongside Jennifer Saunders. The Absolutely Fabulous movie was released in 2016.

Joanna’s accomplishments are many and varied! In 1995 Joanna was awarded an OBE and in 2017 she was honoured with a Fellowship, the highest accolade bestowed by BAFTA upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to the industry.

She has worked on a number of fascinating travel programmes – The Northern Lights (BBC, 2008) and with ITV, Joanna Lumley’s Nile (2010), Joanna Lumley’s Greek Odyssey (2011), Joanna Lumley’s Trans-Siberian Adventure (2015) and Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road Adventure (2018).

In 2018 she undertook her first ever 30-date live tour around the country – ‘It’s All About Me’ where she wowed audiences with her charismatic style and humour. Her distinctive voice is frequently heard in television advertisements; she has currently teamed up with Brita on its initiative ‘Just Tap’ in a bid to rid the world of plastic bottles.

For many years Joanna has been a vocal human rights and animal welfare campaigner (she has been vegetarian since the 70’s) and is known for being the public face of the Gurkha Justice Campaign that saw landmark success for Gurkha soldiers wishing to settle in Britain.
